Calico, Liverpool

Planning consent was secured for construction of three blocks of student accommodation in central Liverpool.

Highlights:

• The scheme consists of three blocks of student accommodation of 8, 11 and 15 storeys providing 735 beds in 210 units (109 clusters and 101 studios) with ground floor communal welfare, leisure and management facilities and 578sqm of commercial space.
• A number of amendments to the scheme were secured via a S.73 Application.  One of the most interesting changes was the omission of 6 cluster bedrooms and the introduction of a Sky Lounge, which showcases the breath-taking panorama of the Liverpool skyline.  
• The accommodation is more akin to a hotel with three gyms, social hubs, laundry and games areas. 
• The name ‘Calico’ was chosen for the building taking inspiration derived from the local area, which has been the historic home of Liverpudlian fabric businesses.  The interior of the building reflects the local theme with a modern, quirky and luxurious feel, giving it a contemporary twist.
• The vision for the project was to design a statement high rise scheme, with an eye-catching  façade and interesting architectural details. This was achieved, as the building is now a prominent visual reference point for the quality of future investment and development in the area.
